Your pelvic floor supports so many functions in your body: It stabilizes your core, supports your organs, and helps with regular functions like digestion and intimacy.
And when your pelvic floor works as it should, you don’t think about everything it does to keep you healthy. But when it begins to weaken, that weakness can cause a myriad of issues, like incontinence and sexual dysfunction.
At Harbour Direct Primary Care, we help you stay strong and healthy by attending to every aspect of your health and wellness—including your pelvic floor. Here, we’ll talk about your options for treating a dysfunctional pelvic floor and how to strengthen pelvic muscles in Jamestown, RI.
Kegels
If you’ve had concerns about pelvic floor weakness for a while now, you’ve probably heard of the exercise known as Kegels. This exercise helps you strengthen your pelvic floor by having you actively contract and relax the muscles in your pelvic floor.
Doing this exercise every day for about 10 minutes helps rebuild some pelvic floor strength, but many patients struggle to remember or form regular routines.
Surgery
You can also improve your pelvic floor using surgery. In this procedure, a surgeon would make an incision, cut away a small section of your loosened pelvic floor, pull the rest of the muscles taught, and then reconnect them, making them tighter than before. Most patients avoid this option, since it is painful, invasive, and requires lots of time for recovery.
Emsella
The last option, one we offer here at Harbour Direct, is Emsella. This noninvasive treatment doesn’t require daily habits, incisions, injections, or probes.
Instead, it uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to stimulate the equivalent of around 11,000 Kegels in one 28-minute session. This stimulation provides an intense “workout” for your pelvic floor, causing an increase in muscle mass and overall pelvic floor strength.
